Burglary (Written by Gabriel 3K)

P3 Situational Practice

One hot Thursday morning, I was dismissed from school. I was surprised to see my house's door slightly ajar. I quickly ran into the house and saw my mother tied and gagged to a chair. The whole house was in shambles. Furniture were overturned and many items were broken. I then heard a rustling sound in my room. At that time, I was full to the brim with curiosity.

Full of curiosity, I peered into the dark room. What I saw astounded me. There was a humongous figure ranshacking my cardboards and looking for me. I thought to myself," What a huge person! It is better not to mess with him!" As I was about to escape, I stepped on a piece of broken glass." Ouch!!"I shouted loudly. Then I felt something hit my head.
" Where does your mother keep her jewellery?"shouted the robber in an unpleasent growl, holding a pistol to my head." It's in my mother's room, the third cabinet" I replied in a scared tone. When the robber went to look for my mother's jewellery, I realised that the robber did not tie me up properly. with immense strengh, I freed myself from the binds of the rope. I also freed my mother using a shattered glass piece from the floor. My mother immediately fished out her
handphone to call the police.

Within a few minutes, the police arrived at my house, armed. When the robber heard the wailing sirens of the police cars, he tried to escape but he was surronded by policemen at every angle, pointing their guns at him. After a while, the robber was taken away for custody. After this accident, my mother will remember to lock the door the next time.

Robberies! written by Gabriel 3K

The thief (narrative)
One humid night, Vijayan Muniandy was looking for a job. His luck dried out as nobody wanted to hire him. Vijayan emptied all his pockets to find some money. Soon, Vijayan realised he was broke. He had no choice but to rob an elderly woman. Vijayan tailed the old woman. When Vijayan knew that it was the time to strike, he asked the old woman, "Where is the MRT station?" "If you go this way, you will see the MRT station," replied the old elderly woman. Vijayan ran into the lift at the nick of time when the lift doors almost closed. "I left my ez-link card at my friend's house," Vijayan told the elderly woman.
When the old woman went out of the lift, Vijayan snatched the old woman's gold chain and rushed down the staircase. The old woman was drenched in perspiration when she told her daughter the news. Her daughter immediately fished out her hand phone to call the police.
After fifteen minutes, the police arrived at their house. The female officer asked the old woman, "What had been stolen from you?" "My gold chain," replied the old woman truthfully.
After the robbery, Vijayan's greed took over him again. He used the same method to rob another woman. This time, a necklace was successfully robbed from the old woman. After the phone call from the second victim, the police began to take action. They visited pawnshops and soon found out that Vijayan had gotten $15,000.00 from pawning the jewellery.
After the two robberies that Vijayan had committed, he decided to escape to Malaysia for at least a year. At the custom, he was stopped by some police officers. They wanted Vijayan to go to the police station with them.
"Where were you on 27 April, 10.00 a.m. asked the police officer. "I was in Malaysia," replied Vijayan with a guilt written on his face. "It's no use denying it. All the evidence we have points at you," the police officer hissed. Vijayan had no choice but to admit he was responsible for robberies. Vijayan was then sentenced to 3 years and 9 months imprisonment.

Dialogues (Know how to write dialogues correctly)

eg.

The police officer commanded, " Hands up in the air!"

"Keep quiet if not, I will kill you," the robber warned.

"Shut-up!" the gangster shouted.

The evil looking burglar hissed," I will kill you if you don't tell me where you have kept your jewellery."

Are you Ready for our MEGA AUCTION?

Dear Pupils,

I’m so glad that many of you have shown improvement in your composition writing. Well done! Many of you remembered to use many golden phrases, effective dialogues, apt adjectives and adverbs which made your stories fun to read.

These are some of my favourite phrases taken from your writing:

1) When I finally woke and regained consciousness, I found myself tied to the chair and my mouth gagged by a burglar who had many tattoos on his muscular arms. I felt goosebumps and a shiver down my spine when I saw him brandishing a sharp dagger threatening to kill us all!

2) “Put down your weapon and turn around slowly with your hands on your head!” the police officer hissed at the burly burglar.

3) My neighbour whispered, “Let’s lock the doors with these metal chains so that the burglar will be trapped inside.”

To celebrate your hard work, I went shopping at two flea markets during the one-week-break and bought many prizes for our MEGA auction at the end of the year. These are some of the prizes that you can bid for with your SUPERSTARS awards.

Congratulations!

Mr Kok

The boy who has so much PASSION. Do you?

The boy who was mentioned by Mrs Sim today...enjoy the story.

This 12-year-old boy wearing an orange t-shirt and blue shorts left everyone wondering, "Who's that boy?".

Reason? He ran close to 15km in the rain, alongside bearers of the Youth Olympic Flame torch, as it made its way through Sengkang, Punggol and Hougang.

Clad in slippers and clutching a digital camera - which got soaked in the rain as well, the student from Compassvale Primary School told reporters from the Straits Times that his run wasn't planned.

He said he just wanted to catch a glimpse of the flame and follow it, as he "may never see it again".

Class Composition- enjoy

One late afternoon after school, I was taking a leisurely stroll back home. When I was at the doorsteps of my house, I was astonished to find the door left ajar. I felt goosebumps and a shiver down my spine because I knew my parents were attending a wedding dinner and would not be back so soon. Therefore, it must be someone else in the house other than my parents! Would it be a burglar?

Actually I wanted to go into the house to investigate and check what was going on. Fortunately, I did not. I remembered that my teachers had taught me to be careful and not to be rash. I decided to seek help from my friendly neighbour who had a heart of gold.

I sprinted to my neighbour’s house and knocked on their door. Thankfully, he was around. I was on cloud nine and elated to see his familiar and friendly face. I told him what was happening at my house and both of us sprinted over. My neighbour who was also an expert in Wushu was fearless and stepped right in.

When we saw the stranger who was busy ransacking the house, we saw red and gave him lightning glares. The burglar tried to escape but he was no match for my neighbour. My neighbour gave him a punch and a flying kick which sent his head spinning. At that moment, I fished out my phone and called for the police.

After fifteen minutes which felt like hours, the police finally came. They acted swiftly and handcuffed the man who looked downcast. He was remorseful but what he did was unforgivable.

When my parents came back home, they were rather surprised to see the whole house in a big mess. We explained to them what had happened and they were so proud of us and crowed about what we did to everyone in the newspaper when the reported interviewed them. They were also on cloud nine and brought us to a wonderful vacation.

Do you know why owls could see at night?

Do you know why owls could see at night?

For thousands of years, the owl has been a creature to which people have attached special significance. Primitive people have many superstitions about the owl, chiefly because of the peculiar cries it makes. In many parts of Europe when an owl is heard to hoot, it is considered a sign of death. In ancient Greece, the owl was a symbol of wisdom. That is why the simile, ‘as wise as an owl’.

Owls of one species or another are found in all parts of the world. In the frozen arctic districts, owls have snowy-white plumage which blends in with their surroundings and keeps them sage from their enemies. In parts of Texas there are owls so tiny they are no bigger than a sparrow, and they feed on grasshoppers and beetles.

The owl is a bird that really comes to life at night, and its whole body is especially suited to this kind of life. First, let’s take the owl’s hoot. When the owl utters this cry in the night, creatures who may be nearby are frightened by the sound. If they make any motion or sound, the owl hears them instantly with its sensitive ears.

The ears of an owl have a flap on the outside, unlike most other birds. Some owls have a kind of ‘trumpet’ of feathers near the eats to help them hear better. Once the owl has startled its prey and heard its motion, it can see it even in the dark! There are two reasons for this remarkable ability. The eyeballs of the owl are elastic. It can focus them instantly for any distance. The owl can also open the pupil of its eye very wide. This enables it to make use of all the night light there is. The owl’s eyes are placed so that it has to turn its whole head to change the direction of its glance.

Even the owl’s feathers help it to hunt its food. The feathers are so soft that the owl can fly noiselessly and thus swoop right down on the animals it hunts. Some owls are helpful to farmers because they destroy rats, insects, and other enemies of crops. But there are other owls that are fond of chickens and other domestic fowl, and these owls cost the farmer quite a bit of money!

Can you list the reasons why Owls are so adapted to hunt in the night based on the above article? (Leave your answers as comments) Reminder: Please use complete sentences. Thank you.

Also, the Honeydew and Mango pupils may also leave any other comments that you have after reading the article.

German fans want revenge grilling of oracle octopus

BERLIN (Reuters) – Some Germans are calling for a public roasting of the oracle octopus who correctly picked the winner of all six of their national soccer team's World Cup matches -- including a bitter defeat to Spain on Wednesday.

Paul, a two-year-old octopus in a German aquarium, turned into a global celebrity for his uncanny ability to predict the winner of all Germany's matches -- even a group stage defeat to Serbia and an ousting by Spain in the semi-finals.

"Nothing beats grilled octopus," said Dolores Lusch, a Germany fan who works on a Berlin fish stall. "Cut him up in thin slices and grill him on all sides with a dash of lemon juice, olive oil and garlic on it. Delicious!"

Not an ordinarily superstitious people, Germans became believers in Paul's possible psychic powers. The country was shocked and distraught when he picked Spain to win after tipping German wins over Argentina, England, Ghana and Australia.

German newspapers and websites were filled with suggestions of what to do with Paul -- most involved cooking and eating him.

"Throw him in the frying pan," wrote the Berliner Kurier newspaper in a popular sentiment echoed by Die Welt, Sueddeutsche Zeitung, the Hamburger Abendblatt and other newspapers.

Paul's picks have become news across Germany and around the world. German networks have had live reports on Paul's picks.

On Friday, Paul will tip the winner of Saturday's Germany-Uruguay match for third place as well as the winner of the Spain-Netherlands final on Sunday. Networks in Germany, Spain and the Netherlands are planning live coverage.

The octopus, considered by some to be the most intelligent of all invertebrates, gets the choice of picking food from two different transparent containers lowered into his tank -- one with a German flag on it and one with the opponent's flag.

The container Paul opens first is regarded as his pick.

Media attention over Paul's picks in Germany and abroad has grown exponentially and some commentators even wondered aloud whether his improbable winning streak might have begun to influence some of the more superstitious players.

Despite the antipathy toward Paul, Sea Life spokeswoman Tanja Munzig said Paul has a bright future at his home in Oberhausen.

"Nothing bad will happen to Paul," she said. "No one wishes him ill-will. Paul has had a great run."

Munzig added that Paul's career might go on.

"We've had some enquiries about his future," she said.

Why does the moon follow us when we drive?

Why does the moon follow us when we drive?

The moon doesn’t look as it it’s very far away, but its distance from the earth averages 239, 000 miles. The diameter of the moon is 2,160 miles, or less than the distance across the United States. But when the moon is observed with a very large telescope, it looks as it were only about 200 miles away.

Because the moon seems so close and big to us, we sometimes forget that 239, 000 miles is quite a distance away. It is this great distance that explains why the moon seems to follow us when we drive in a vehicle and look up at it.

To begin with, out feeling that this is happening is just that – only a feeling, a psychological reaction. When we speed along a road, we notice that everything moves past us. Trees, houses, fences, the road – all fly past us in the opposite direction.

Now there’s the moon, part of what we see as we look out, and we naturally expect it also to be flying past us, or at least to be moving backward as we speed ahead. When this doesn’t happen, we have the sensation that it is “following” us.

But why doesn’t it happen? Because the distance of the moon from the earth is quite great. Compared to the distance our vehicle travels in a few minutes, that distance is enormous. So as we move along, the angle at which we see the moon hardly changes.

In fact, we could go along a straight path for miles and the angle at which we would see the moon would still be basically the same. And as we notice everything else flying past, we get the feeling of the moon “following” us.
